What is Sound Healing and How Does it Work?

Allow me to introduce you to my ALL TIME favorite self-love practice: Sound Healing.

Sound healing a holistic approach to cleansing your soul and restoring inner balance by utilizing the profound power of sound and vibration. It’s also one of my FAVORITE self-love practices that I do on a weekly basis.

While sound healing can be a perfect escape from the stresses of modern life, it has been found and practiced all around the world for thousands of years. Some of the earliest records can be found in Tibet, where Buddhists have been using these sonic frequency technologies for over 2,000 years.

Whether it’s the use of ancient Hindi mantras to the medicine melodies of Indigenous peoples in South America, to Pythagoras’ daily use of musical rhythm therapy, the power of sound has been used in many different ways to move us from a place of imbalance to a place of balance.

How Does Sound Healing work?

Sound healing works on vibration. Whether you know it or not, everything in the universe has its own unique vibrational pattern, including your body… we’re just energy after all 🙂  Sound helps to facilitate shifts in our brainwave state (it’s vibrational frequency) by using entrainment – a temporal locking process in which one system’s motion or signal frequency entrains the frequency of another system.

That’s basically just a fancy way of saying: synchronizing our bodies to an external perceived rhythm. The most common result? Dancing.

Of course, it can go far deeper than that. Entrainment can also be used to shift our normal beta state (normal waking consciousness) to alpha (relaxed consciousness), and even reach theta (meditative state) and delta (sleep; where internal healing can occur).

This same concept is utilized through breathwork meditations, but with sound it’s the frequency that is the agent which influences the shift.

Through sound healing, you tune your body like you tune an instrument. Of course, different instruments are set to certain frequencies.  Sound healing allows your body to heal itself by slowing down your brain waves, which affect every cell in your body, shifting them from diseased to being in ease. Essentially, it’s just aligning it with whatever you need.

Benefits of Sound Healing

It’s super-relaxing

Deep relaxation is one of the most significant and universal benefits of sound therapy. “The sounds permeate our system returning it back to harmony,” Sarhangi says. So if you take nothing else away from a sound healing session, relaxation on its own is worth it. With our busy schedules and so much going on in the world, we can all use some chill vibes.

Helps you focus

Sound therapy can also help you regain focus in your life. This is achieved by lowering brain wave frequency to help you focus more. By using specific frequencies to help re-balance brain function, sound therapy can help you think clearer and avoid the temptation to rely on self-destructive and addictive habits. A healthy mind promotes a healthy body and you can break the cycle of negative thinking and habits to enjoy a much calmer and focused life.

It helps clear energetic blockages

Some people experience deep healing during sound therapy as the sound vibrations open, clear, and balance their chakras and release stuck energy. Schieffelin describes it as an “energetic deep tissue massage” that leaves you feeling balanced and replenished.

It boosts your health

That’s right—it’s not completely woo-woo. “Research has already demonstrated that sound healing can be incredibly beneficial when working with [a variety of] patients,” Schieffelin says.

Benefits can include improved sleep, reduction of chronic pain and blood pressure, lowered cholesterol, and a decreased risk of heart disease. (Although, for professional help with these ailments, please see a certified medical practitioner.)

Gives you energy

Much of the way you feel is connected to signals that your brain sends throughout the body. A body under stress feels tired and fatigued and one of the main organs that affects stress levels are our ears. Sound therapy feeds the brain with stimulating sounds that motivate the brain to release latent energy.

If you haven’t tried it, I really encourage you to do so. And remember: it’s a process and requires practice. The first time you go, your thoughts might be running all over the place, but after a few sessions, you’ll notice it becomes easier to slip into the deep meditative state. Enjoy!

PS – if you’re based in Berlin, I HIGHLY recommend you to check out my dear friend Eugenia at Har Yoga — her sessions will melt you.
