What is a Lightworker?

A Lightworker, perhaps traditionally known as a boddhistava, is someone who makes a conscious decision to endeavor to answer the call of Source (light) over the call of the ego (fear).

For those familiar with the healing arts, you’ve likely come across the term lightworker. However, although it has been gaining popularity in recent years, as with many spiritual terms and concepts, there is no objective way to define what exactly a lightworker is. What a lightworker is and their role in the world can differ dramatically depending on who you talk to.

With that said, I’ve had the great fortune of working with many clients whom I consider to be lightworkers. From energy healers to yoga instructors to breathwork experts, I’ve seen first-hand some amazing individuals doing what they do to elevate the collective consciousness – that is, to spread the light.

So, here’s my take on what exactly a lightworker is and the role they play in the world.

Where does the term Lightworker come from?

The term was first coined by author and teacher Michael Mirdad, a spiritual and metaphysical teacher, keynote speaker, self-help and new age author, and an intuitive healer and counselor in the early 80s. Then, in 1997, the term was further cemented into contemporary culture when Doreen Virtue released the book, The Lightworkers Way.

Ok, so what is a Lightworker?

What is a Lightworker?

In my humble opinion, a lightworker is someone who makes a conscious decision to endeavour to answer the call of Source (light) over the call of the ego (fear). They understand that their actions (no matter how big or small) have the potential to raise the vibration of the planet.

Perhaps the ancient term for the word lightworker is bodhisattva, which refers to anyone who has generated bodhicitta, a spontaneous wish and compassionate mind to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings. Of course, this implies that a lightworker is on a spiritual path, fully aware that their energy matters and that they are part of something that is bigger than them.

Lightworkers are not just your New Age Yogi stereotypes that live in a van. They can be anything, from teachers to film producers to cleaners. How they spread the light doesn’t really matter. What does matter is that all lightworkers feel an enormous pull towards helping others.

What exactly does it mean to ‘spread the light’?

There is a whole spectrum of energies that make up our universe. On one end of the spectrum you have light energy is unlimited and comes from Source. It’s high vibrational, expansive and full of love. On the other end, you have dark energy which is much more dense. Dense energy is the foundation of the ego, which sees us all as separate, rather than connected spiritual beings. As the basis of fear, it resists the flow of The Universe and is the source of all our struggles.

To become a lightworker, one must first find their own inner light, which can also be thought of as Love. They understand that their light or love (high vibrational energy) can instantaneously dissolve darkness or fear (low vibrational energy).

Lightworkers turn their light on by following what lights them up and then effortlessly sharing that light with the world around them. They are in tune with the callings of their soul and act on its whispers regardless of fear. They pay attention to the signs of the universe and follow guidance from a higher source. They do not need to convince anyone of anything, rather just be the light.

It is believed that once you find your light, you will automatically become a lightworker. Shining your light on unconscious darkness will become your very nature. You will wholeheartedly make the decision to make the world a brighter place.

Qualities of a Lightworker

Lightworkers Believe In Service Over Self

A lightworker understands that putting others first is one of the fastest ways to transcend the ego. They know that great compassion not only helps others but helps themselves on their own spiritual journey. This precious Truth allows them to focus on helping all sentient beings through their particular skills. They feel a burning passion to replace others’ suffering with bliss and their businesses operate accordingly. For a lightworker, it is not about success or self – it is about service to others.

Lightworkers Always Learning, Evolving And Expanding

A lightworker understands that growing, learning, and expansion of consciousness are never complete. Spiritual living is one of constant evolution. After-all, if you aren’t living on the edge, you are taking up too much space.

A lightworker understands that the world of form is not here to satisfy us, it is here to challenge us. Just when we think we’ve got it all figured out, life throws a wrench in our plans… and that is a good thing because it means we must continue to adapt and evolve. Therefore, a lightworker’s journey is never complete. They are always expanding and embracing the secret of ascent – going up and up, higher and higher.

Aimed At The Elevation of Consciousness

Living in the digital age presents a multitude of both obstacles and opportunities for spiritual growth. While there are more distractions than ever, access to Spiritual Truths and the opportunities for serendipitous connections and insights has also never been so plentiful. Consequently, we are experiencing a massive shift in global consciousness. More than ever, people are waking up and that is largely thanks to all the lightworkers.

Whether it is energy healing, yoga or meditation sessions, shadow work or Kundalini doesn’t matter – all lightworkers are aimed at the same goal: healing and elevating the collective and individual consciousness.

For Lightworkers, Giving Is Receiving

Qualities of a Lightworker

Jesus stated the universal law of Karma as good as anyone when he said: “give and you shall receive.” Regardless of language, culture, or religion, this eternal spiritual Truth rings true across all cultures.

The energy that you emit into the universe is the energy that you attract. Therefore, the more love that you give, the more love you will attract. Conversely, the more that you take from others, the more that will be taken from you. A true lightworker lives by this philosophy, giving as much to the world as they possibly can. Of course, they are not doing it to receive. They are doing it because it is the right thing to do and it brings them great joy and peace. Lightworkers know that by helping others, they are helping themselves. After-all, you reap what you sow.

Focused on Collaboration Over Competition

The objectives of a lightworker has nothing to do with winning, that is ego stuff. This is not a zero sum game. We are all in this together, working tirelessly to elevate the collective consciousness.

Lightworkers think of their success like a fire. When two flames come together, they burn brighter. Their goals align with the goals of both their clients and their peers. Lightworkers don’t get involved with petty competition or trying to ‘corner a market’. No, lightworkers want everyone to succeed, even their ‘competition’. LIghtworkers know that all boats rise with the tide.

Lightworkers bring people together and build community, rather than use their cunning to rip off customers and cheat out competition. After-all, intelligence includes while cleverness divides.

Lightworkers Manifest Their Goals And Objectives

Lightworkers understand the laws of attraction and use them to manifest their dreams. They don’t sit around idly hoping that things will happen. Rather, they have absolute and utter faith in their abilities to get things done.

Hope is waiting, it is passive. Faith is knowing, it is active. Each day lightworkers affirm a mindset of abundance, which of course manifests in their external reality. After-all the inner is always reflected in the outer. They always maintain this faith, even in the darkest hours, believing in their abilities to get it done no matter what. To a lightworker, scarcity doesn’t exist.

Lightworkers Face Fears And Stay Spontaneous

Lightworkers understand that fear is the sharpest definition of themself as a person and a business owner. Business owners or not, most people don’t like fear and they do anything and everything they can not to face it. If you’re a lightworker you’ve realized that fear is your friend, and therefore, you no longer feel uncomfortable with it.

On the flipside, they embrace it because to a lightworker, fear is fuel. Feeling it helps them stay at their edge and allows real transformation to occur – both personal and professional. Fear of fear creates limitations in many ways. It could result in over-action, too aggressively trying to win clients, forcing your approach on those that don’t need it, etc. It could also result in under-action, sitting on excess capital, staying safe and not trying new avenues, etc.

Lightworkers Embrace The Now

Two things lightworkers know: a) life is unpredictable and b) nothing is permanent. With this awareness, they understand that they cannot force how things will go in any area of their life – including their business. Of course, setting goals, planning ahead and having a long term vision are critical to the success of any business, however, things may not always go according to plan… and that is okay.

Rather than obsessing over rigid plans or expectations, a lightworker stays loose and flexible, taking each step one day at a time. Rather than worrying about things outside of their control, they focus on the one thing that they can control: doing their absolute best right NOW.

Types of Lightworkers

Types of Lightworkers

Lightworkers come in many forms, using different mediums to spread their light. While they can include and everyone, from salespeople to priests, these are some of the most popular types of Lightworkers:

1. Shamans or Spiritual Guides

Lightworkers who are driven towards serving living beings and the Earth through healing using mental, physical, emotional or spiritual approaches fall under this category. They are often highly perceptive of feelings and emotions in others, and characteristically can alleviate pain and hurt within a few minutes of time spent with people or animals.

2. Healers

Healers serve humanity, the earth, animals, all souls, and all beings. Healing can take so many different forms. It can be mental, emotional, physical, or spiritual – there are so many different modalities. If you are a Healer, listen to your internal guidance about the modalities, techniques, and ways that you can be of service through your gift. The work of healing as a Lightworker also includes yourself. You’re raising your vibration and filling yourself up with light so you can then heal, support, serve, love and guide others.

2. Psychics, Clairvoyants, Seers

These are Lightworkers who have opened their third eye or their psychic sight to see beyond the physical; beyond the maya (veil of illusion). They provide readings or services to inspire, empower, and help guide others.

3. Gridworking and gatekeeping

Grid Workers are matured lightworkers who specialize in clearing work, their main role being opening of inter-dimensional grid lines to let light and love flow through. The grid refers to a unit that connects all awakened hearts and sacred sites on Earth using lay lines.

Gatekeeping is a more advanced form of grid work in which you work with your team to open interdimensional gates to allow higher levels of light and love in. From government employees or diplomats to mediators or yoga instructors, this unique type of lightworker encourages peace, kindness, positive energy and fairness to all living beings.

4. Manifestors

Also known as divine blueprint creators, manifestors are a type of lightworker that are expert at channeling their energy to attract what they want. Of course, this implies the right use of will which should be aimed at aligning with the cosmos and awakening the collective consciousness for humanity.

5. Guides and messengers

These lightworkers possess a rare flair for spreading important messages to the world. Whether it’s through videos, blogging, teaching, or writing, they concentrate their efforts in areas where their inner light and magnetic presence can make the greatest impact on others by communicating messages of love, peace, spiritual awakening and enlightenment.

6. Transmuters

These lightworkers dive straight into the darkness in order to transmute it and release it into the light. Transmuters may be working on behalf of the collective consciousness and all humanity by transmuting past karma.

8. Adventurers and ascension guides

These are people who are ascending. They are stepping into greater levels of light and sharing what they’re learning about the ascension process. They show us how to overcome some of the pitfalls, paradoxes, and traps in our spiritual paths.

9. Soulpreneurs

Soulpreneurs are a rare breed of people that use their work as a way to express their higher self. They can be entrepreneurs, freelancers, healers, artists, coaches, etc. But more important than what a soulpreneur does – is how they do it. In fact, it is their approach to both work and life that makes them more than just another professional.

Are You a Lightworker?

Not all lightworkers realize their purpose on Earth from the beginning. To know if you are destined to be a lightworker, begin by tuning in to the self – search within your heart and determine whether channeling your light out in the world is one of your life missions.
